How it's going

Where the game stands

Matchnight already plays season after season: pick any club in the four English divisions, then chase promotion, cup runs and European nights while 128 nations play on around you. The latest builds brought young players who grow into their talent (one in ten never quite makes it), free agents who find new clubs, and a quicker way to play through the weeks. Next on the list are an easier way around the game's screens and the first match sounds and music.

Added

  • Your assistant can loan out a well-paid spare player to make room for a signing when the club is over its spending limit.
  • Below the Premier Division, a club over its spending limit may replace a player who leaves with one who costs no more, as real leagues allow.
  • Older free agents with no club at home can sign for the rich leagues abroad, the way real stars end their careers.

Changed

  • Play on until needed shows its screen at once and each result as it is played.

Fixed

  • Starting keepers no longer slowly creep above the rest of the team over long careers.
  • Pressing Enter or Space during a quick result, Play on or the summer screen can no longer play anything twice.
  • A player whose contract ends in the summer can no longer be loaned out or loaned in that window.

Added

  • Young players grow faster: a big talent who plays every week reaches most of his potential by 19 or 20.
  • One young player in ten stops short of his potential, and his player card hints at it.
  • Good free agents find new clubs, and your pre-season list shows everyone released, so you can sign one first.

Changed

  • Clubs keep players rated 80 or more when their deals end, unless they are injury-prone or hot-headed.
  • New keepers start a little lower, so they stay level with the rest of the team as they grow.

Fixed

  • List headings sit over their columns in the squad list and Find players.
  • On a computer, the bottom of the team pitch no longer hides behind the Continue bar.
  • A club can no longer release a player and sign him back the same summer.
0.0.53.03 added · 2 changed · 2 fixed

Added

  • The game is called Matchnight, on the title screen, in the menu and in saved files.
  • New pictures: classic shield crests in club colours, players shown by the back of their shirt, and engraved trophy plates.
  • With the assistant switched on, he signs a better player for a weak spot when the team is behind the board's target.

Changed

  • English clubs keep fresher squads: shorter deals from 29, and new signings aged 21 to 24.
  • The Premier Division pulls in more of the world's stars.

Fixed

  • Clubs abroad no longer make stars out of nothing each summer.
  • Taking a summer job at a club going up from the National League no longer breaks the Home screen.
0.0.52.01 added · 4 changed · 2 fixed

Added

  • Fixed squad numbers: the first team wears 1 to 11, everyone else 12 upwards, and a signing takes the lowest free number.

Changed

  • Ratings look like football cards: everything shows 10 higher, so the world's best are around 90.
  • Every club has a squad of 23 to 25 players.
  • Premier Division clubs pay real Premier Division wages, and every wage rises evenly with a player's rating.
  • Wages are the biggest cost at every club, so a well-run club makes money.

Fixed

  • A few screens still showed the old grade letters.
  • On the team screen, the energy bar no longer runs past its shirt.
0.0.51.07 fixed

Fixed

  • The table arrows and the points strip under a result show the right moves.
  • Home's "Since last week" no longer goes blank in long careers.
  • Older careers get their loan players' wages put right.
  • Tapping tabs no longer waits for a save, and leaving mid-save keeps a spare copy.
  • On phones, no text is smaller than 14 pixels, the title logo fits, and long names shorten instead of being cut.
  • The record crowd counts only matches at your own ground.
  • A player out on loan in his last season can be given a new contract or released again.
0.0.50.04 added · 2 changed

Added

  • One set of simple line icons replaces the emoji on every screen.
  • Celebrations: a goal sweeps the scorer's colours across the scoreboard, a signing flips in with a stamp, and trophies and promotions get a full-screen moment with confetti.
  • Short sounds for full time, signings, trophies, the sack and job offers.
  • The title screen's logo slides in, and the new-career steps slide sideways.

Changed

  • "Skip build-ups and celebrations" in the menu turns all the moments off.
  • Every list of panels and cards uses the same spacing.
0.0.49.05 added · 4 changed · 3 fixed

Added

  • An optional assistant who handles the squad: fair bids, short positions, youth day and key contracts.
  • Home warns how many defeats away the sack is, and which positions are short of players.
  • Food kiosks, bars, shop stalls and hospitality boxes at your ground, each with a price level.
  • Keyboard shortcuts on a computer: Space for the next step, 1 to 5 for the main tabs, Esc to go back.
  • Before you sell a player, the game shows who takes his place and how your best team changes.

Changed

  • Home shows one next step, what needs you and what happened since last week.
  • News and club messages show their headline first; tap to read the rest.
  • Find players opens straight on results, and the squad list is one row a player.
  • League has five tabs: Tables, Cups, Europe, World and Stats.

Fixed

  • Two clubs no longer meet twice within a few weeks around Boxing Day.
  • Ratings by position stay level over long careers.
  • The larger text sizes no longer squeeze names to nothing on a phone.
0.0.48.12 fixed

Fixed

  • Running costs no longer grow with your income, so a well-run club can make a profit again.
  • Bonuses and tax follow the wage bill, so wages are the cost you control.
0.0.48.02 added · 4 changed · 2 fixed

Added

  • A home advantage: home sides now win nearly half their matches.
  • The titles and cups each club wins in your career appear in its honours.

Changed

  • Money at real sizes in every division: incomes, wages and crowds follow real clubs of each size.
  • Wages follow a player's quality, with a top wage for each division.
  • Computer clubs keep a healthier age mix, and players retire from 33.
  • Club flags show only in European and world club cup results.

Fixed

  • The golden boot story names the season's top scorer in the last week.
  • A new career started in the same session no longer keeps the last career's growth pace.
0.0.47.02 added · 4 changed · 1 fixed

Added

  • Ratings are coloured by your division: green above the average starter, grey around it, amber below.
  • The game saves in the background at the moments that matter, so it never stops to save.

Changed

  • Keepers, defenders, midfielders and forwards of the same quality now have the same rating.
  • Clear steps in strength between the divisions, and computer clubs keep sensible squads.
  • Best value in Find players counts the good seasons a player has left.
  • Saves are about half the size.

Fixed

  • A club relegated from the Premier Division could escape its fine for overspending.
